Is it illegal to ask for donations for something like a car?

Like someone seeking for a hard-to-get dream car?

Would it be illegal at all? locally or online? and for small amounts, like one dollar donations per person?

Thank you for the help!

Only if you commit fraud. Otherwise it is called begging and it is not illegal.

If you are honest about why you are asking for a donation, it is not illegal. However, if you lie, it becomes fraud, which is a felony.

If you just say "Hey, I want a (insert car here), and I can't afford it. Donate some money to help me out?" It's totally legal.

Who knows where can I get Info of car donations for disabled people ?

Is for a couple with hard disability. They need transportation, like a car or van special for.

Try local things. Make your own fundraiser for them.

People are generous... So eventually you should get enough.

Try researching on google for "Used cars suitable for disabled people" or something..

I find it heart-warming that you care about these people so much. Keep up the good work (Y)

There are local programs almost everywhere. Call the companies that you see advertise to donate vehicles. Also contact the organizations that support the specific disabilities they have and ask for where they know about. They can also see if their state rehab agency would help them - less likely, but possible.

Anyone know of REPUTABLE tax deductable car donation org's in Missouri??

Some National Organisations Like Veterans and for the Blind are top rated. I did donate a car to the Veterans a few years ago and went A OK. Think they are the same in Miserie as well as Taxachusetts

Car donation?

Is there a site where people who donate cars post them? I'm looking for a car that anyone is donating.

YEs there is .....

i think only charities or non-profit organizations receive the car donations. i don't think its for the general public.

You can go to your locate good well ,out of the closet, and salvation army they are always look for car donations.

I just make a donation to a hospital in Burlington, MA?

and I make a visit to the clinic last Monday. Most of the cars in their staff parking lot are Audi, Lexus, BMW, Mercedes and Acura. The least expensive one is a Ford Mustang.

My car is a 1986 Toyota Corolla and it start falling apart. I have no money to fix it.

Will my mom very upset when I tell her about my donation to these wealthy people?

what business is it of hers? don't mean to sound harsh- but do what you will with your money.

I donated a car to American Diabetes Association; do I send an original or copy of this?

I can't remember the name of the form I send. However, do I send a copy or an original a form that has to go to IRS for proof of the donation?

No, don't send the IRS a copy. Just KEEP the copy and report it on you income tax (Schedule A). If you get audited, you will need to show it.

Honda f1 car donations?

this is Ross Brawn, i am looking for a new car for my F1 team, because mine are crap, if anyone has any spare parts they wish to donate, it would be greatly apreciated :)

ha ha ha this is funny :)

Do a swap deal with Williams, they can build you a chassis and you can build them an engine...to even up the deal, you could pay them to develop the chassis through the whole year. With Honda's budget Williams would produce something special, and it would be interesting to see which of Williams and Honda are actually better at running an F1 team given equal equipment.

i would donate them.....an white flag....which jenson and rubens can wave wen attacked by the force india's of Adrian and giancarlo....lol....

and i heard jenson and rubens are thinking of switching der seat at honda with the safety car drivers.......the mercedes benz safety car is more stable than that honda...and atleast wen ever it comes out it has the lead/...;-)!! LOL!!!

sorry to honda fans and jenson fans and barichello fans.....take it on an lighter note...;-)

OMG.... Poor Honda. Better to start from scratch really. Super Aguri had an auction that day... could've gotten something from there

If your condidate loses,do you get a bumper sticker of the winner and put it on your car?

you know how people make donations to the Sheriffs department thing and put the police badge sticker on their car figuring when they get stopped for speeding it will help. They still get a speeding ticket, go figure.

NOT ME!!! no way!! I put NO stickers on my car!!, where I live only the die-hard liberal ole hippies do that!! and they all teach at the local college, go figure!!

Are you suggesting that if I happen to be driving through the wrong area with the wrong candidate's sticker on my car, I should be pulled over just for exercising freedom of speech?

There have been times when I wanted to pull other peoples' bumper stickers off their cars, but I held back and mentally gave them the finger instead.

I don't put bumper stickers on my car or signs in my yard. There are too many haters out there that believe they have the right to deface your property if you are supporting a candidate that is not their choice.

By the way, I am a conservative.

Actually, i saw a cop pull over a guy with a hybrid and an obama/biden sticker on it. I thought it was funny. I would so pull over any obama guy if u saw a sticker. Just out of spite. Thankfully im not a cop

no, I would take the loser's bumper sticker off though

BTW I have a friend with like 5 of those Police Benevolent stickers on his back glass. quite funny, easy to spot him though

There's a reason why they coined the term "bumper sticker mentality."

Yes, I put on Mickey Mouse sticker on Nov. 5. Represents a winner very well.

Not unless 'Don't blame me I voted for Ron Paul' is the name of the winner, and somehow I missed it.

I was a winner either way. My bumper sticker read...ANYONE BUT HILARY!

i still have that kerry bumper sticker (yeah, him!)

only way im putting anyone on my car is if they put a fat check in my hand:D

Nope, I don't put bumper stickers on my car.

no, I don't do bumper stickers...

Nope still have my McCain/Palin sticker on my car and will keep it there.

No. My bumper stays the same -- "Ron Paul for President."

lol

That's just a rumor floating around, it's been goin around for ages!!

I dont have any bumper stickers :)

But if i caught a guy that was goin for McCain speedin, I'd still arrest him or give him a ticket.

lol, its pretty dumb for ppl to think this

How easy or complicated is it to write off a donated vehicle on my taxes?

I hear tax laws have changed regarding writting off donated vehicles. I mean, how bad can it be? If anyone experienced something like this let me know, or know much about the laws on car donations etc.

Usually the charity that receives a donated car sells it. The charity will send you a form 1098C indicating the proceeds of the sale. You are allowed to deduct that amount.

If the proceeds are less than $500 then a 1098C is not required and you deduct that amount.

If the charity uses the vehicle for its own purposes, or gives it for free or for less than its sale value to a needy individual, then the charity will send you a statement that you are allowed to deduct the fair market value.

You used to be able to write off fair market value for the vehicle. Now you can only write off what the charity actually sells it for.

You can only deduct charitable contributions if you itemize.

And yes, the rules on how much you can deduct have changed. If the charity sells the car, which is usually what they do with donated vehicles, you can only deduct what they sell it for, not fair market value as in the past.

It got more involved because there are new rules to follow in terms of how much you can write off (not as much) and the recordkeeping requirements...see IRS.GOV

How do I go about donating an older used Mercedes to charitable organization?

How can I find out which charities accept used car donations?

web search for ur area many will pick it up for u salvation army is natiowide one that does

i take donations for my get out of debt fund as well :))

this is what i can suggest, why not just sell the car first, then divide the proceeds to 5 or 10 foundations...

atleast, in this way, you would be able to find a good buyer for your car and be able to help several foundations...

by the way, if you have extra time, visit this site:

http://sickandmalnourishedchildren.blogspot.com

Contact the charity that you want to support to ask if they take car donations. If they do, they will handle the rest. If not, there are some organizations that act as clearing houses for car donations.

If I make a donation to a charity before April 15th can I use that against last years income taxes?

We are donating a used car to a charitable organization. If it is done before April 15th filing deadline can I use it against 2006 Tax year's income?

You should also be aware that tax write offs on car donations changed. You can no longer just claim a value of the donation, but rather you write off what the organization can sell the car for.

Nope; must use it for 2007 unless you are filing your taxes on a fiscal year, which is unlikely. Also, you will need a valid fair market appraisal and a receipt from the organization in order to deduct it at all.

If you want to fund an IRA for 2006, you have until April 16th of this year to do that.

No, the cutoff for donations to count for 2006 taxes was 12/31/06.

No, to use it on your 2006 return you would have had to have made the donation in 2006. You can use it on your 2007 return.

To take a deduction for a donated vehicle you'll need a letter from the recipient organization that lists the amount of money they received for it when they sold it. That is the amount you can deduct, regardless of what the fair market value is.

No

No. You are filing your 2006 taxes. The cut off for anything is December 31. Anything done this year will be filed for next year in 2008. Sorry.

No becuase if you get any proof of donation it will be dated 2007, therefore you can claim it in 2008.

No. You had to have donated it by Dec. 31 2006

All of those above are correct on the year that you can claim it. A bit more information on what you can claim: if the charitable organization gives it to a low income individual (or sells it substantially below market), you can claim fair market value. There are a couple of other cases also. If they just sell it, you are indeed restricted to what the charity gets.

For the fair market value, if the value is greater than $5000, you need an appraisal. If the value is 500-5000, you can use www.kbb.com (plus the paper work from the charity).

I need a help with getting a car.....?

I'm a single mother, I have no car and I've been having to borrow a car and I really need a car of my own so I can start working and give my mother her car back because she is getting sick of me using hers, I live in central PA if you know of any car donations PLEASE let me know I don't have any money to get a car. someone please help with some information.....

thank you in advance

I would write what you said in your question and go to several local car dealers. They get some cars in trade that they pay companies to remove from their dealership. They took in a 1990 Geo Metro in trade for a new $38,000 Lincoln. They only took the Geo because they wanted to sell the expensive vehicle. They pay $500 for a auction company to come get the Geo. Tell them that you will sign a "Hold Harmless" paper if they let you have a car for free. It will save them $500 and get you a car..

The charities you hear advertising for car donations sometimes give the donated cars that run to people like you. Look for some in your area.

I want to donate a car to Am Lung Assc. Does any one know how to contact them or if they accept car donations?

Receiving a Car as a charitable gift in PA?

I have a room mate who needs a car for work and school. He is currently temporarily disabled, physically and will never return to his regular job. We live in PA. A friend in NJ has a vehicle (car) that her father is willing to 'give' as a charitable donation, and will need a legitimate receipt for tax purposes. Anyone know the easiest way to do this, legally?

Thank you

I don't believe that there is one.

To get a tax deduction, the car must be given to a charitable organization. It can't be given to an individual. Also, giving to a charity with the express directions that they give it to a certain individual also cancels out the deduction.

He could give it out of the goodness of his heart and not worry about the deduction but I do not believe that there is any way for him to give your roommate the car and get a tax deduction.

You can't. Donations to individuals, rather than to registered charities, are NOT deductible as charitable donations, no matter what the circumstances are or how worthy the recipient is.

There is no way to claim a charitable deduction when the property is given to an individual. You can only get it when donating to a charitable organization.

I am technically a dependent but want to donate a car (title in my name): is the deduction possible?

My old car is basically on its last legs; it is probably worth $1k-$1.5k and I would probably have an easier time donating it than selling it because of the heavy engine work required.

My question is: am I able to receive any sort of credit/deduction from the donation? Technically I am a dependent of my mother, who lives in Tennessee, until I finish school next year. Would she be able to get the deduction (she itemizes) if I donate it here in Virginia (the title is in my name)?

Thanks

applerock, Try visiting a car repair center in Virginia. http://www.autorepairshoplocator.com/Virginia-Auto-Repair.html They can help you with your questions. Try calling several shops and compare what they say.

Typically when you donate a car to a charity, you will be required to hand over the title of the car as well. In order to do so, it must be in your name. Consequently, the tax certificate received will be in the name of the donor and title holder.

Yes, you can get a nice tax deduction by donating your car.

How can I get the most money for my old junky car?

I bought the car from a "dealer" for $750. He gave me a warranty. I probably should have used more discresion, but was desperate for wheels. Anyway, found out that the brakes are bad and getting worse everyday. There are also a few leaks. The guy won't communicate with me or help me at all. At first he said he would give me my money back, then said he didn't even have that much money to give me. Now when I call him he hangs up, if he answers the phone at all in the first place. It's a 91 Honda and probably would be fine for someone if the brakes and leaks were taken care of. I just can't afford to do it. How can I get the most money for it? I realize that I won't make it all back, but are there any other options besides craigslist and donations?

Thanks!

Put it in the paper for 750 or best offer, its worth that with bad brakes. State in the add it needs new front pads and brake lines. Let it go for $650 or so. You should get calls on the add. I used to buy and sell junky cars that way.

the best way to get the most money is to part it out you could get double what you paid for it. you could get between $200 and $400 for the transmission if its good then another 3 for the motor then sell little things like the seats and windows and doors depending on the condition of the body

I would also find out about the "lemon laws" in your area to get back to the dealer.

there is always somebody out there that wants a fixer upper or a car just to drive till it dies. Post it in the paper or radio, be honest with the things that your know are wrong with it. You may not make all your money back on it but at least it is out of your hands. You should'nt feel bad if you sell to somebody if you told them the things you knew were wrong with it.

Car donations?

Looking for non-profit that provide cars to the needy instead of auction them for money

There are a ton of such organizations out there now that make it easy for income eligible citizens to own cars. They do this by making it advantageous for folks to donate their used cars for an appropriate tax write-off. The cars are then serviced, if necessary and sold to those who might otherwise not be able to own a car. Some charities actually GIVE the cars away, others charge a nominal fee. Not knowing where you are, I can't really say what your options are (assuming that you're looking FOR a car and not to DONATE a car -- i apologize if I'm wrong in that assumption) so you might want to googling for an organization in your area (I'm sure there are plenty!)

Good luck to you.

Thanks. I have 3 cars and no longer use a minivan w/approx 125k tires (5k) nice a/c all leather. I wish to make sure that I get full donated value. middlemen make money on auctions, any good charities in mind that will give it to a family in need. http://answers.yahoo.com/question/accuse_write?qid=20061006062726AAu67QE&kid=TJAqD2S5UWVvPjGiLH3DkvWvJgoYwl3pDQazPOrac6NqcCiFtmD8&s=comm&date=2006-10-12+09%3A12%3A57&.crumb=

How do I donate a car to an EV developer?

I have a 1999 Saturn SL1 with 160K miles.

Free to the right person.

It is a 5 speed standard in fairly good condition except the engine.

Once too often I let the oil change go a week too long, or so. Now there is a clacking noise coming from one of the internal bearings.

This car would make a great electric conversion and I will give it to anyone wishing to use it for this project. (technically I will sell it to you for $1.00, unless you are an established charity able to handle donations.)

The current registration is good until November. It is currently in the Sebago Lakes Region of Maine, and the engine is good for some unknown number of miles. Maybe 100, maybe 10k? I have removed the car from my insurance policy, and the state inspection is overdo.

----

Easy! Advertise it on this board (it's free) where the EV builders hang out.

You could sell it, or donate it. Sounds like someone would be glad to have it.

Try the universities around your area. I work for a transportation research program in my university's engineering department. I know if we were closer I'd snatch that up in a hurry.

give it to your local high school autoshop, they will love you for it and it goes to teach our kids how to work on cars

I donated a car to charity. I only got a notice stating the model and year, no $ value. What amount to deduct?

I know IRS wants $ amounts. I insisted in getting some $ evaluation from the charity, or a disclosure of the price the car has been auctioned for, but this organization stands firm. They say they can only confirm my donation without getting into the financial aspect. They advised me to discuss the issue "with my accountant". I do not have one and I don't think it is worth spending extra money just for clarifying this issue.

If the value of the car is greater than $500, the charity MUST send you a 1098C describing what they did with the car. If they sold it (with only minor repairs) or junked it, you may claim only what the charity received. If they gave it to a needy person (or sold it to a needy person below market), you may claim the fair market value in a private party sale. Try www.kbb.com for these values. There are a couple of other possibilities (depending on what the charity does with the car), but those are the main ones.

youre supposed to deduct the fair market value of the car, or what a willing buyer would pay for it. this may be alot less than the blue book value if the car needed extensive repairs.

if the value is over $5,000, then you would need a written appraisal.

this pamphlet will give you answers to all your questions. there is a list of qualified charitable organizations and there is even a phone number to complain about charities.

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-tege/pub4303.pdf

Maybe try looking up the blue book value.

get a blue book or go to the blue books site. they list the value of all model cars by the years and condition. then you can put in your amount

If they didn't tell you how much they realized on the sale of the donated vehicle, you get no deduction at all. Keep this in mind when making future gifts to this charity -- at the very least, don't donate any vehicles to them in the future!

Kelly Blue Book

Look the value of the car up on line. There are many places, and used the retail value of the car for your deduction. Keep print out of the site and the receipt from the non-profit. You should be covered but with the IRS you never know.

Do you ever ask for anything in return for making a donation?

I get, on average, 3 calls a year from local and State police organizations seeking donations. In return, they offer to gladly send me a car window decal to show my support.

When I ask them, "can the decal be used as a 'get out of a speeding ticket' bargaining chip?" They usually answer, "doubtful." I then respond, "my donation is doubtful as well." Click...

We don't get asked for donations that much, especially phone calls, they're usually in the high street and they don't give you anything. I want to find someone asking for World Aids Day donations, I would like a red ribbon this year.

i have then state police call me and i always tell them no i wont send them one,but they still call back 2 weeks later,

Clint Eastwood

I have been donating to the Humane Society for 25 yrs and they send me address labels, t-shirts, keyrings, all kind of stuff.

I would never give donation.

I never donate....

Yes, a tax receipt so I can take a deduction.

no

I don't do donations ... charity begins at home.

Can I write off a donation from 2004?

In 2004, my husband donated a car but didn't write it off because our standard deduction was higher. This year our standard deductions are lower (due mostly to the fact that we bought a house). Can we write off that donation on this year's taxes?

No you can't. You can only write off 2007 donations on your 2007 tax return. Sorry.

Sorry, but you can only write it off in the year of the donation. Since it wasn't worth claiming it in 2004, the deduction is lost forever.

The only way to claim it is to amend your 2004 tax return. You have until 4/15/08 to do that. Hurry!!!

If I donate my old car, what are some alternatives in the Chicago area?

My car is 15 years old and runs, but needs a new windshield, tires, some repair and lots of TLC. I've heard that some pick up middlemen are scam artists, charities don't always get the proceeds from the donation, and the donor might be left in limbo. Also, what do I need to do in preparation if I decide to donate it?

Check with the charitable organization to which you will be donating the vehicle. Then, clean it out of all personal belongings (including your insurance cards, registration and driver's license!). Also remove any extras that you may have accumulated (tools, flashlights, first-aid kits or anything that you wish to keep.

When the organization sends a tow-truck, make sure you have removed the license plates and scraped the inspection sticker and registration sticker off the windshield and sign the title to the organization; make sure you've recorded the mileage properly.

Make sure you get a receipt for the vehicle (noting date, year, make, and model) as part of the donation MAY be income tax deductible.

make sure the people picking it up are who they say they are, that's the biggest problem with donation cars like that some other people get a hold of them and you get no tax credit or relief on them,id make sure the people that picked it up had the proper paper work to do it with, there are scam artist out there that make a good living of getting free cars like this, good luck with it.

Can you still donate a car to a charity for a tax deduction?

I have some unusual income this year and will have a big tax liablity. My current car is about to give out so I may want to replace it. can i get a tax deduction for my donation? Is it worth it?

Yes you can take a deduction, but if the car is ready to give out, it won't be a very big one. After they sell it, they'll give you a form saying what they sold it for.

When you donate a car, your allowable deduction is what the organization sells it for - on a car not in good shape, won't be much, and even if it was in good shape, it's usually wholesaled so goes well below blue book value. To take the deduction you have to itemize. Your tax savings at most is the amount they sold it for, times your tax bracket. So if they sold it for $1000 and you are in a 25% tax bracket, your tax savings will be at most $250.

You can safely deduct the market value of your car without documentation other than a receipt from the charity if you limit your deduction to $500.

If you donate to charity, and the charity sells it for more than $500, you will get a 1098C from the charity and you can deduct that amount, regardless of what the car may have sold for on the open market.

You have no control over what they sell it for. Except for the hassle-free aspect of donating the car, better to use it as a trade-in, or sell it yourself and donate the cash to charity.

Yes, but it has gotten a little trickier.

If you donate to an organization that is going to sell the car and use the money, you must wait until they sell it and you deduction is limited to what they sell it for. They will provide you (and the IRS) with a form 1098C showing the proceeds of the sale.

Yes, however:

1. If the charity sells the car, rather than using it, then you can no longer deduct its actual value, but can deduct the amount for which the charity sold it.

2. If the charity uses it, rather than selling it, then you can still deduct the value of the car.

3. If the car is about to give out, then both of the above two amounts are probably not much.

It is better that you sell the car yourself and give the money to the charity.

If you donate the car to the charity, they have to first sell it, and you can deduct only the amount realized by the charity. It may be much less than what you can sell the car for.

You can, but only you will know if it is worth it. The answer depends on how much your car is worth compared to how much you could get on a trade in or sale.

You can still donate it. But there are stricter rules as to how much of a deduction you can take. People used to deduct the "blue book" amount for the car. Now you can only deduct the amount of value the charitable organization gets from your car.

There are a few charities that take the donated cars and give them to low income people. If a charity does that, you can take the fair market value for the car. Of course, if it "is about to give out", fair market value might be small and the charity might not find it practical to give the car to a family. We occasionally do some fairly large repairs (done by volunteers or at discounted rates) that would not be reasonable for an owner to do.

What is reasonable to charge for a charity car wash for the humane society per car?

My car wash is in the works. If all goes according to plan, it will be held at a self service bay at a professional car wash that will be donated for the day by the business. Since most likely volunteers will be bringing our supplies from home, I am not expecting more than a simple suds and rinse. How much of a donation can I charge?

This is probably the number one fundraiser that our local school does to help raise funds for prom and sports. They usually sell tickets ahead of time and they were usually $5 each. This gave students the chance to sell tickets and get money up front. It also gave them an idea of how many cars they would be washing that day. And some of the time the people who bought a ticket don't show up, but that does not matter since you already have the money! Plus you will have people who will want to drive up to get their car washed. That means more money raised! Good luck.

It depends on how many donations you are expecting to get..

Not many people are willing to spend over $7 on a carwash.

If you think that many people are going to show up, you can make your price lower, which, will in turn, lure more people in to wash their car. (the more people, the more donations) If you plan on having no service, go with a higher price (not too outrageous) around $6.50 is reasonable.

5 or 6 dollars

I would say $5.00.

I'd pay 5 dollars

Toys for Tots Car Donations?

How does the donation process work and what happens to the cars that are donated?

Usually the charity, (TFT, Goodwill, etc.), will take title to the vehicle and auction the vehicle as is. The donor then receives documentation stating what the charity received for the vehicle at the auction. The donor can then use that as a tax deduction for a charitable donation. You can no longer use the taxable value of the vehicle as a guideline for a tax deduction.

The cars are usually sent to another country where they can be easily sold. If they claim that the cars are being donated to a charity or church in that country, they go duty free.

Basically, you call them, tell them you have a car that you have the title to and they can have. They come, you sign the title to them, they take the car. If it is worth fixing, they will fix it and sell it, donating the money to charity. If not, then they will sell it to a junk yard and donate the 50 bucks they get that way to charity.

Will I have to pay taxes on a donation account for a benefit for myself?

My family is holding a benefit for me. My husband was killed in a car accident in october. I am on the verge of losing my house. my husband had no life insurance. I am not sure how to open a donation account. Will I have to claim the donations as earnings? And pay taxes?

Go talk to a local bank. That's how these are usually set up. They may qualify as gifts, because they do not qualify as charitable donations.

Anything that goes into the account will be a gift to you, not a tax deductible charitable contribution from the donor.

How much should i donate for a car seat check?

I am having my infant car seat inspected at a local police station. They accept donations, and the proceeds go to funding the program and purchasing car seats for those who cannot afford them. I would like to make a donation, but do not have much to give. What is a reasonable donation???

This is a wonderful program but don't concern yourself with the amount of money you're able to donate. I think a $2 - $5 donation is more than enough. If you are unable to donate $2 - $5, then see if you can donate your time. Maybe filling some papers, making coffee, etc. If you are unable to do that, then give away some the baby clothes that you aren't using anymore to a different charity. It's all about what's in your heart.

The fact that this subject concerns you, makes you a better example of humanity, than most.

Too often, we see people wanting everything for free and when they get it, they show little or no appreciation. Being a parent is the most important thing in the world, and taking good care of and protecting that child is a duty than none should take lightly, and here, again, you shine! You are doing something that most parents probably don't, you are having your seat inspected to ensure your child's safety.

In my opinion, a donation of approximately 10% of the cost of the seat being inspected, would be appropriate. In your case,

I would say, not to worry about a donation, bake some cookies, maybe, to express your appreciation and simply say "thank you". You would be surprised at how rarely they are thanked for the service they provide, not only for checking car seats, but for the job they do everyday...

Then, tell every parent you know about the seat inspection service they provide, be their advertisement.

Anyone can give money, but, sincere appreciation and respect is worth so much more...

Let you conscience be your guild. Give what your heart tells you. That is what it means to donate.

Give only what you can afford. Don't put yourself out for it, many of the car seats are donated. I don't know what your financial situation is but I would probably give 5 or 10 dollars. The point is to make sure that your precious cargo is protected. Go get it checked :)

God Bless!!

You're Local Fire station will do it for free and give you a certified copy of approval. GOOD LUCK!!

I also had my baby's car seat inspected for proper installation and I donated to the trust fund $10.00 bucks and they seemed very appreciative.

Is it illegal to ask for donations for something like a car?

Your Question

Is it illegal to ask for donations for something like a car?

Like someone seeking for a hard-to-get dream car?

Would it be illegal at all? locally or online? and for small amounts, like one dollar donations per person?

Thank you for the help!

illegal? No.

Pointless? Yes.

Every municipality has laws against pandering. You need to check your local laws regarding what you want to do. If it's considered pandering, you could be arrested and prosecuted. If it's not, don't wait for the money to pour in. It won't.

you can ask for anything.. you just can lie to people to get their money.. you have to tell them that youre lazy and selfish and want to use their hard earned money to buy yourself a set of wheels...

You can raise money by whatever means.

You can ASK all you want.

Same as a child asking for gift from parents

I've tried it no one cares about the asker too many selfish people.I wasn't even asking for a dream car just one that runs

no

just be honest for the reason you want the money for.

no

No, but it's pretty seflish.

no. I dont' think is illegal

Loaning a car as In-Kind Donation?

I am considerting loaning my extra car to a local non-profit for an out of town visitor for @ 3 weeks.

How much can I claim as a tax credit for this? Is it by mile, daily rate, etc?

Thanks!

$0.

You cannot get a deduction for a donation of a partial interest.

$0

The is no tax deduction for the donation of the use of an item.

To get a deduction, you would have to give them the car with no strings attached.

You can only deduct a gift if you transfer title. You cannot deduct the fair market value of a house or car if you retain ownership.

I don't think that is the same as giving it to them

You don't get any charity deduction unless you have expenses. Also charity deduction is itemized deduction. You will take deduction only if your itemized deductions are more than your standard deduction.. Read: http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/05/itemized-deductions.html

I want to give a way my car for donation well i don't need it any more?

1st it has a transmission problem

2nd i lost my title and MVA said i will have to go all the way to PA and get a duplicate title. e.t.c

so i just don't reall have that time for it anymore.

so where can i donate it to for like parts not to be driven

Try looking for a high school or trade school that teaches auto mechanics or auto body work. Look in your yellow pages.

Does someone know of a web site where one can request a car as a gift?

I am on social security disability, and I receive a low income each month. I am in dire need of a decent & reliable car to get me to my dr. appts, bank, errands, etc.

Does anyone know of a web site where I can make a request where I could possibly receive a car as a donation/gift?

Thanks!

I would not try a website, but go to a church and explaine to them the situation, they are really good in finding less fortunate people a running automobile. Its not going to be the newest thing, but it'll sure get you places

I would also check with the Salvation Army. I know around here we can donate cars to be used for folks that are in need.

Your local senior center or Soc Sec office may help you...We have The Ride in MA, call 24 hrs in advance and they take u where u need to go...

As far as free cars...enter in as many contests that u can and good luck!!

My friend wants to donate a car to another friend but wants a tax write off? How does he go about doing this ?

So he donates a car to another friend or stranger HE doesn't want to donate to a charity but to another person. Can he still get a tax write off? If so what does he need to have ? Forms?Deeds?Receipt? What does the need to have to prove he gave the car free for donation to the other person so that he can get tax write off in VA

He can't. It has to be a non-profit organization to get a tax write-off.

That is known as a gift and it is not deductible. The tax code allows deductions for charitable contributions because congress wants to encourage charity, but congress doesn't care if you give a gift to a friend and so no tax deduction is allowed.

You can only get a deduction for charitable contributions to non-profit organizations, then it needs to be in "good" shape.

uh...the only way is if the person is a charitable org.

period.

Otherwise all car transfer's would be "donations"

Is it legal to setup an online account for donations for a personal car?

I fell asleep behind the wheel on a country road, and woke up when my car went flying throught the air (Drove through the ditch) I lost a wheel and completly desrtoyed my '98 Malibu.

Is it legal to make a website with pay pal to take donations from random strangers? Could donors still make a tax write off?

You can take the donations.

The donors can NOT write it off on their taxes (you are not a registered charity)

You will have to report the income on your taxes.

yes it's legal..no tax write off unless you are a legitimate non-profit org.

It's legal as long as you state exactly what it is for and where the money is going. No tax deductions however since you are not a charitable organization.

Oh come on now. That's nothing. I owned a business and one of my employees went in on a Sunday when we were closed and stole everything in the business. The police said there was no crime committed and refused to go after him (the cops in this town are lazy as hell). I'm out thousands of dollars and it wasn't my fault.

Now, who is more deserving, you or me?

It is not illegal, but they can't take a tax write off because you are NOT a non-profit organization. Why would random strangers want to give you money?

Car donations...Are they ever available to individuals?

I'm always seeing or hearing about people donating their extra car for tax credit. Are there charities which choose to reward these vehicles to low income families or single mothers etc. It seems to make since to me, someone who has a hard time with transportation is going to have difficulties with establishing employment.

Thanks for any insight

Sincerely,

~ Drea

Yes there are!

http://www.carangel.com/

This is a great organization I suggest you look them up and then they will direct you to one in your area.

Hope you get my car, I just donated one to them, a 99 Nissan Altima--if you do, enjoy!!

Yes, try your local 'Salvation Army', some Social Services may also help you with insuring and registration if you meet their requirements. But remember, owning these kind of used vehicles can have their share of maintenance problems.

3 Tax Questions : Lease Refund, Car Insurance premium and Donations:?

1- I turned my leased car in and received a refund, do I need to

show it on my taxes when I file, and in which section?

2- Can you claim car insurance premiums? ( I couldnt find anything addressing that on tax slayer)

3- I made a donation to salvation army - about 15 bags of clothes and shoes - they gave me a receipt but they did not itemize -or specify a dollar amount, How should I claim it ?

Thanks

1 - No

2 - No

3 - You determine the value. Donations go on Schedule A (Itemized Deductions). If you go over $500, there are more forms to fill out (Form 8283 ?????). Two things to keep in mind. One, used clothing is worth much less than you think and can only deduct its value, not its original cost. Two, donations only get you a tax benefit if you itemize. If you are not paying on a mortgage, you probably won't have enough to itemize and you will get no benefit from the donation....besides clean closets.

1. Unless it was deducted as a business expense (not just claiming flat amount for milege) it is not considered income and not taxed.

2. Unless you are closely tracking all vehicle expenses, using the vehicle for a business, etc. why would insurance premiums be deductible? If you are using this vehicle for business (other than communting to/from work), there are a lot of qualifiers and forms - check IRS site. If you are deducting and/or being reimbursed a flat milege amount, then it is not deductible since its cost is already covered in the milege reimvursement. (Personally, I recommend the milege reimbursement unless you are using the vehicle almost exclusively for work and have it's ownership under the business).

3. You have a receipt. That is all you need.

Side note: This is not the place to ask these unless you are looking for general ideas. Research the IRS site and/or tax accountant.

1. No

2 No, if it's your personal car. If it's a business car, then probably yes, at least in part.

3. You can't, unless it's itemized. If it's itemized, then you could get dollar amounts from their website showing about what the items would be worth.

Were can i find a donation for a car for someone who is disabled?

IT DEPENDS ON WHAT HAPPEN TO THEM

IF IT WAS FROM THE SERVICE , I WOULD SAY GO TO THE LOCAL VFW , OTHER THAN THAT I CAN'T HELP

What is a typical donation for a free car wash?

I say $10, it is only right to pay a fair wage for work done

i would say $5 to $10.....

Five dollars is typical.

depends on the size of you vehicle, if you have a VW bug or a SUV... I think $5.00 is a good middle amount, but if larger go up... if you bring in your Semi-truck, $50.00 ... at least.

$5-$10

I think $5 for a mid sized car, more it you have truck or an suv

Depends on quality, but $5-10 unless it's just lousy.

Depends on how much you support the cause. $5 - $10

Donation as is for a cause?

Then 5, 8 or so dollars. Also depends where you are at. Are you in a bigger town, or a small town? Are the majority of people well off or most just average?

If it's just free for fun....then a buck or two for a tip.

I do not know what that would be and am not really concerned.. I pay only a dollar IF it is done right.. I made a mistake the last tme and gave the person $1 but later I noticed that the washing job ws NOT good and was sorry that I tipped $1

6 dollars if they do a really good job.

Personally, I wouldn't give them a dime, free is free ;-)

$10

$5.77 - $7.36 is fair.

$5.00

$5-10, depending on how much you have on you and what the car wash is for, although your affiliation with one group or another is all personal preference.

$10 for school car washes esp if there are tons of cute girls in tight outfits.

5 dollars.

What things do I have to bring to a car wash??

I'm part of a group holding a car wash. What things do we need and are there any tips in raising more money? Should we do a donation car wash or 5 dollar car wash?

It depends on if you really need the cash.

Tips on car wash:

Work fast

clean good no dirty on cars

be careful or else you might scratch something

5 dollar is not bad but is it enough?

not many people trust other people with their cars unless you are famous for doing car wash

so start with some neighborhood cars then work your way up.

soap

rags

towels

sponges

windex

paper towels

bottled water

soap, bucket, sponge and water. $5. is plenty.

try a sponge, bucket and water that usually works

Can I file a donation made on the 31st on this years tax returns?

I already put in to make the car donation to purple heart and they're soonest available time to pick it up was on the 31st which either way I'm glad they're getting the car I wasnt using but I was wondering if I can still file that on this yrs tax return, it is still this year but I'm not sure if there is a cut off on donations I know its 100$ tav deductable

You can claim it this year. You'll need a form from them though, saying what they sell it for - that is the amount you can deduct, not "blue book". You only can deduct it if you itemize. Your tax savings is the deduction amount times your tax bracket %, so if they sell it for $2000 and you are in a 15% bracket, and you itemize, your tax savings is $300. If you don't itemize, there is no tax savings.

In short, anything you do on or before Dec 31st can be put on the current years taxes. Check the IRS website. There are certain deductions and credits you can claim on the current years tax but you can take care of it after Dec 31st.

Check out www.irs.gov website for more information.

You may claim the donation for this year.

Be sure you get a statement from the charity to substantiate the deduction.

Are you aware that you are only going to get like $500 for this tax donation? And then only helps your taxes if you already itemize?

Yes.

Even if you failed to claim it this year, you could claim it for 2009.

When get 500 deductible for giving car away to donation, do i get 500 bucks back in taxes?

No, you get a $500 itemizable deduction to put with your other itemizable deductions. If you have enough deductions to make your itemized deductions higher than your standard deduction, you benefit from the donation by lowering your taxable income by $500. So you will save somewhere between $0 and about $125 by donating $500.

Bob F is correct. You will get a tax deduction of $500 on your itemized deductions. In order to itemize you must have more itemized deductions than what your standard deduction comes up to. Depending on your overall adjusted gross income you could be limited to how much deduction you can take this year. You may have to carry some of it over and use it next year. If you don't have enough to itemize your deductions you will get no benefit by donating the car. Can you sell it for that? If so I would.

No, if your deduction is $500, your tax savings is that times your tax bracket, IF you itemize - if you don't itemize, you get no tax benefit from the donation.

Your deduction isn't necessarity $500, but if it is, and you are in a 15% bracket, and you itemize, you'd save $75 in taxes.

Chances are you will not get any thing.

Charity deduction is itemized deduction. You will take deduction only if your itemized deductions are more than your standard deduction.. Read about charity deduction: http://taxipay.blogspot.com/2008/05/itemized-deductions.html

Who knows where can I get Info of car donations for disabled people ?

Is for a couple with hard disability. They need transportation, like a car or van special for and they have no money.

I would first call your county Department of Family and Children Services, DFCS, found in your county government listings, make an appointment, take documentation and in conference with the case worker, take notes, then follow their advice. If their suggestions don't net you what you need, use the same approach with the Salvation Army, then United Way. Also, online, Google "car for disabled". That will net you agencies asking for donations of cars, but to whom, using their Contact Us form, you can state your need.

the social services now helps with 500 dollars toward a car for people in ky i do not know where u r at but check

http://www.highbeam.com/doc/1P2-3961476.html

If anyone of them has a military background, check with the vocational rehab department at the DAV or VA.
