It's not worth the transmission repair or the risk once it was fixed because of it's age. I just want it out of my driveway.
Junkyard? Donation? What do I do with it?
You can donate the vehicle to charity, and take the retail value of the vehicle (up to $500) off your taxes if you itemize!
If you take the standard deduction, there is no tax benefit to donation!
You can call the local scrap yard and see what they will pay for the car! If you can get it there yourself, you most likely can get $100-175 for the vehicle as scrap. They may also have someone who is willing to come out and get it, and pay you something ($50 or so) for it!
If you said what area you were in, I may have been able to give you a better idea of what donation options there are!
If it needs alot of repairs contact your local fire training center. Vehicles that are not suited to be donated to families who need a vehicle go there to die. The fire training center will pick it up for free, give you a tax write off certificate... then either set it on fire or rip it apart with the jaws of life for training purposes. Good luck! You might try PBS's website to see if they will take a non-running car like yours for a donation. Otherwise, I'd just have it towed and junked.
There are some non-profits who will come and take the cars in exchange for a tax write off and then there are some non-profits who use independent companies to deal with it for them on their behalf (especially if the charity doesn't have a dealer's license.)
Look on your local Craigslist under Services> Automotive and there will be a lot of these companies advertising.

I gave them TWO nonworking cars. They then had a truck show up and picked up BOTH at once. It was easy and I got a nice tax deduction out of it. The either sell the car or part it out and use the proceeds for childrens programs across the country. They have an 800 number you an call and they will tell you if your car is on their list of acceptable autos but I'm pretty sure that a 1990 Thunderbird is ok. I had a 1988 Taurus and a 1987 Honda Accord. For each car, I got a free 3 night stay in a nice hotel, too. Keen.
Call your local school system and see if the vocational training department could use it.
That's what I did with a similar vehicle (blown tranny 1992 minivan).
Otherwise, there are parts that the salvage yard could use so call them.
Google "vintage auto" with your zip code. Call the numbers of vintage dealers and repairmen in your area and ask them. They will probably know how to help you get the best deal.
